Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding
Criterion A assesses what you know and understand about how how to create a realistic performance. You will be able to describe how specific movement and vocal techniques are used to create a realistic character within a published play.

It will include what you know about the new skills you have learnt and will demonstrate your understanding of how these techniques are used within performance.

It will include what you know about the new skills you have learnt and will demonstrate your understanding of how these techniques are used within performance.
In your Process Journal you will:
- Connect the new terminology you are learning with your practical exploration in class by answering guiding questions.
- Demonstrate that you understand why specific movement and vocal skills are are used within a performance to communicate a realistic character .
- Analyse videos of performances and in-class exploration to identify how these skills are utilised to create a realistic portrayal of a character.
- Make research notes on your character in order to understand your character fully so that you can practically communicate a character to the audience effectively.
Criterion A Assessment: Character Analysis
To be able to use your movement and vocal skills effectively to communicate a realistic character (and their status) to an audience you must fully understand the character you are playing, and their role within the context of the entire play.
For your Criterion A final assessment you will evidence your understanding in the following task:
Actor Interview
Imagine that you have just performed your play in the West End or Broadway. It has been a HUGE success and the press are eager to interview you to find out more about the play and the process you went through to create such a realistic character.
With a partner you will create a three minute video of an interview situation, in which you discuss your role within your play.
You can present this interview scenario in a number of ways:

NB: To prepare for this task, you should ensure that you complete all of the tasks on the website page, Preparation for Character Analysis.
During the interview the following questions must be answered in detail to evidence you understanding of the characterisation process:

- Who wrote the play?
- What themes/issues are addressed by the playwright in the play?
- Tell us about your character and their journey (what happens to them) within the play.
- If you had to describe your character in two words, what would they be?
- Why did you choose those two character traits? Could you give me two examples from the play when the character exhibits these characteristics?
- Which character does your character have the strongest relationship with?
- Can you tell me a bit about this relationship and the status of your character within it?
- What movement and vocal skills do you use to: a) communicate the character traits you discussed earlier and b) the status relationship between the two characters? (Refer to two movement skills and two vocal skills when answering this question.)
