Developing Skills - Semiotics (Sign System) In Theatre
Criterion B will assess the development of the following practical skills during this unit:
You will develop these skills through the exploration of Edgar Allan Poe's short story, Tell Tale Heart. These skills will be used used to effectively communicate meaning through a horror genre, creating tension in the audience.
You will be assessed using the following:
Your Process Journal (PJ) is very important document as will detail the development of your ideas and skills during this unit. It will document your experimentation with the new skills acquired and reveals the development of these skills in your planning for your final performance.
In your Process Journal you will:
- Use of props in performance
- Lighting Design
- Sound Design
- Abstract Performance Skills

- Practical Exploration and Experimentation in Class
- Completion of lighting and sound cue sheet.
- Final Horror Performance (Using Tell Tale Heart as a stimulus)

- Describe and evaluate the workshop activities you participated in during class.
- Annotate photos and videos of workshops and rehearsal
Final Performance Requirements
In small groups you will create a devised performance within the horror genre,
You will demonstrate your newly acquired skills to create a piece of theatre that uses lighting, sound, costume and props to effectively communicate meaning to your audience.
As you are performing within the horror genre, you must use these skills to create tension in your audience.
- You must create a piece of theatre from your stimulus A Tale Tell Heart.
- Decide on a clear plot, structure and characters - must be approved by the teacher.
- Your performance must be between 8-10 minutes and incorporate the skills you have learnt during your exploration of A Tale Tell Heart from this unit.

- Either live sound or an audio recording must be used within the performance.
- You must decide on an appropriate lighting design for your performance.
- You must use abstract peformance skills within your piece of theatre
- You must use props to create tension.
