Knowing and Understanding Semiotics
Criterion A assesses what you know and understand about semiotics (the sign system) within theatre.
You will be able to describe the how staging, sound, lighting, costume, props and performance style can be used to communicate a specific message to an audience.
You will also be able to explain how they can be used to create tension within a performance.
Process Journal
Your Process Journal (PJ) is a very important document as it will detail many of your ideas and thoughts related to your exploration in class. It will include what you know about the new skills you have learnt and will demonstrate your understanding of how these techniques are used to create tension in a performance.
In your Process Journal you will:
Planning Document
As part of your preparation for your final performance you must individually complete this planning document to evidence your understanding of the theatrical elements (lighting, sound, costumes, props, staging) and how they will be used within your final performance.

- Connect the new terminology you are learning with your practical exploration in class by answering guiding questions.
- Show that you understand how various theatrical elements within the theatre sign system (lighting, sound, costumes, props, staging) communicate a message to the audience.
- Demonstrate your understanding of the difference between naturalistic and abstract performance.
Planning Document
As part of your preparation for your final performance you must individually complete this planning document to evidence your understanding of the theatrical elements (lighting, sound, costumes, props, staging) and how they will be used within your final performance.
This document must be completed and uploaded to your website on a page entitled Criterion A : Group Planning by:
