Knowing and Understanding Bertolt Brecht's Epic Theatre
Criterion A assesses what you know and understand about Bertolt Brecht's Epic Theatre. You will be able to describe the Epic Theatre techniques used to communicate a specific message to audience and will also be able to explain why they are used.
Process Journal
Your Process Journal (PJ) is a very important document as it will detail many of your ideas and thoughts related to your exploration in class. It will include what you know about the new skills you have learnt and will demonstrate your understanding of how these techniques are used to communicate a message to an audience within Epic Theatre.
In your Process Journal you will:
- Connect the new terminology you are learning with your practical exploration in class by answering guiding questions.
- Show that you understand why these techniques are used during a performance of Epic Theatre.
- Annotate photographs of your performance skills, making links to techniques learnt in previous units.
- Make research notes on Epic Theatre techniques and how they are used to communicate with and educate an audience.
News Report Task
As part of your Criterion A Assessment you will produce a newspaper or radio report detailing your research on Epic Theatre.
Imagine that it is the 14th August 1956, the night that Berlolt Brecht died. You have been asked to produce a news report celebrating his work and the influence he had on modern theatre. In your report you should include the following information:

- A brief biography: Who was Bertolt Brecht? Why is he considered an important public figure?
- A definition of Epic Theatre.
- Examples of specific techniques used within Epic Theatre (narration, gestus, placards...)
- An explanation of how these techniques were used to communicate a specific message to the audience.
- References to plays written by Bertolt Brecht.

A. A newspaper article (Between 500-700 words)
OR
B. A radio report (a recorded oral presentation of between 2-3 minutes).
